Our commitment to net zero

We have made the commitment to achieving Net Zero status, focusing on initiatives that will reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, by 2040. We aim to achieve this by increasing our use of low- and zero-emission transport alternatives and minimising our use of domestic air freight. We will also decarbonise our network and our buildings.

We operate a growing fleet of bio-compressed natural gas (bio-CNG) HGVs, which has helped to reduce diesel consumption by about 690,000 litres, as well as helping to cut direct emissions by 85%, compared with the diesel equivalent. A further 49 bio-CNG vehicles are planned for delivery for the current financial year.

The Royal Mail Group recently switched to a 100% renewable electricity tariff, backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin. This will significantly reduce our market-based emissions.

We have signed up to the internationally recognised Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) standard, to independently assess our emissions reporting. The SBTi will help us develop a robust, evidence-backed, path to achieving Net Zero by 2040. SBTi will demonstrate we are aligning our CO2 emissions reduction targets with the UN Paris Climate Agreement and the need to limit global warning to 1.5°C and demonstrates our environmental commitments to customers and investors.

We are committed to reducing our water use by 25% by 2030. Our water consumption is largely for domestic purposes, such as washroom facilities, and vehicle and equipment cleaning.
