Exporting alcohol to Sweden

Alcohol sent to Sweden can only be sent to business addresses as private individuals are not allowed to import any kind of alcohol into Sweden.

If sending alcohol to a business address, the importer/consignee must be a registered alcohol importer with Swedish tax authorities.

Buying dietary supplements online

A dietary supplement is a food product intended to supplement a normal diet. Dietary supplements are covered by Sweden’s foodstuffs legislation. Various rules apply to buying dietary supplements online.

Dietary supplement or medicine?

It can be difficult to know whether your goods are a dietary supplement (i.e. a foodstuffs product) or a medicine. If it is claimed that goods prevent or treat illness, said goods are classified as a medicine. If goods are a medicine, rules different to those for dietary supplements apply. To be sure that you are not ordering a medicine, you should check the description of the goods both on the goods and on the packaging.

If you are unsure whether your product is a dietary supplement or a medicine, you can contact the Swedish Medical Products Agency before you place an order.

Medicines (information from the Swedish Medical Products Agency).

If you happen to order a dietary supplement that is classified as a medicine and we seize your goods, you will receive a decision from us. This decision will state what you are to do.

Buying from a country outside the EU

When you buy a dietary supplement online from a country outside the EU, you have to pay customs duty, VAT and any other taxes. Customs duty depends on the composition of the goods and the country from which they are coming. For dietary supplements (i.e. foodstuffs), VAT is 12 per cent.

On certain items, where the VAT rate is not 25% - which is mainly books and magazines - these may go out in the ordinary VAT flow where VAT and other charges are added. If this happens it could result in your customers being charged VAT additionally on delivery along with a small handling fee. If this happens and a customer is overcharged in this way, they can contact Swedish Customs to claim it back. We are continuing to work with the Swedish Post and will provide an update once this issue has been resolved.

Please note: There may be instances where PostNord have to produce full customs declarations locally irrespective of item value or the VAT scheme used. In any such instances, handling fees of 175 SEK will be payable locally.

This is for information only and should not be considered to have legal basis. Where doubt exists appropriate legal advice should be sought.

General Advice

  • In order to ensure a delivery on time, please ensure that your parcel has the full, correct address, an email address in the correct format and a mobile or landline number for the intended recipient. This will help the delivery partner to ensure the parcel is delivered correct first time. This should be clearly marked on the parcel.
  • Timescales shown above do not include delays caused by destination country customs processes. Please be aware that customs could add additional time to your parcel delivery.
